Hi
I want to purchance a sewing machine to make curtains and eventually baby clothes, nappys etc - once I have learnt how to sew:)
What would be a good machine to start on but with enough features that I can do more stuff as I improve???

I am a fairly experience sewer (made my own bridemaids dresses) and my machine is still only a basic Janome (about $300). You just need a machine that can do straight and zigzag, one step buttonhole and a has some stretch stitches as well, although you can get away with just using zigzag.
If you are finding you are making more clothes then go and get an overlocker (about $500).

Only downside with my machine being bottom end is that it can't handle really heavy fabric, I can't hem jeans as it does struggle a bit through the seam area.

A friend bought the top of the line machine with all the embroidery options and still only uses the same stitches I do, and she paid over a grand.

Hi KD,

I'm a fairly short person and so i have to hem alot of pants and same with my son and so my dad bought me a Brother 2600 for $188 (RRP:approx $350) from Spotlight. They have a good selection and all modesl are on show so they can show you the different functions of them all. Goodluck with your purchase he model i got is fairly basic and has just also hemed some vertical blinds for us.

Hope this helps.
