I need some ideas for sticking/gluing material and ribbon on a stretched canvas. It needs to be an extremely smooth finish. Would double sided tape do the trick? _________________

are you also painting on the canvas?
if you are also painting and using acrylic paint, get the clear top coat one and use that to glue it on.
or you could just try the double sided tape. _________________

no I'm not planning on painting on the canvas just putting material lettering on it. I might try the double sided tape.

Spray adhesive might do the job, it does give a smooth finish, I think if you spray one side only you get a removable stick, like a post it, and if you do both sides you get a permanent bond. _________________ My Beloved is Mine and I am His

I've stretched material over a canvas and used a nice staple gun- which does the trick beautifully. Not using an messy glues either.
I found this link for you:
http://painting.about.com/od/oilpainting/a/stretch_canvas.htm
It gives you a diagram to correctly stretching the material so its nice and smooth and consistent.
Hope this helps!! _________________

Thanks girls for your help. It needs to be permanent and I am not covering the whole canvas. I want to put lettering on the canvas and each material letter has to be stuck smoothly on it. I was also thinking the spray adhesive but wasnt sure how well it would stick. _________________

(I just had an extra thought- it would look really cool if you spray adhered the letters on, then unhooked the canvas and using your sewing machine- went around the edges of the letters!) _________________

Wow Gem I never thought about doing that, that would look fantastic! I wonder if I would be able to manouver the canvas on the sewing machine. Silly question, is the canvas stiff when it comes off the frame? _________________

They're not super rigid- but you could give it a go and see what the result is. If that doesn't work you could always buy a cheap canvas- take only the frame and wrap it the same way with another material or calico- that'd work for sure!
Please post pics when you're done! _________________
